Congratulations to the two fifth grade students earning the Physical Education Student of the Year Award at graduation yesterday. These students displayed excellence in athletics, but also excellence in sportsmanship, social conduct, and perseverance. I was happy to present the awards to Triumph and Franklin!

The last days of the school year are here. Fifth graders are promoted to Middle School this afternoon, and I will say goodbye for summer to our students tomorrow at the bus loop. It has been a great year for Hopkins PE. Our students worked really hard to overcome physical, social, and emotional challenges in the gym. We learned our basic motor skills, more complex game strategies, and how to demonstrate sportsmanship, perseverance, and practiced good citizenship. Our Hopkins family supported the PE department through our y-ties fundraiser, Family Fitness Night, Fuel Up to Play 60, and Field Day. We also broke in a new playground, which will serve the health and fitness of our students for years to come. While I am closing up the gym, I am feeling happy and sad, proud and eager to try new things next year. It has been a successful year. Bobcats--Have a great summer break...As always, stay active! See you soon!
Hopkins students had so much fun at Field Day!!! Be sure to check out Hopkinsrocks.com for the full gallery. Photos courtesy of John Devlin.
Students celebrated the last week of regularly scheduled PE for the school year by participating in free choice physical activities. Some of these activities will be featured at field day, so instructional time doubled as practice for Monday.
In ONE WEEK Hopkins students will participate in field day. Make sure to wear comfortable clothing and bring a water bottle. MONDAY JUNE 8TH=FIELD DAY. See you on the field!
We are in our final full week of May! Next week will start the last few days of school. Check out the June activity calendar and cross off the days as you complete them.
The Hopkins Bobcats Athletic Association is open for football and cheer leading fall registration. Visit their website by clicking HERE to sign up. There are SO many ways to stay active and healthy this summer. Join a team, go to the pool, go to the Chesterfield farmer's market for some fresh produce, or play on the playground. How will you stay active? We are so excited to play on the new playground! During a break in classes, I went outside during Kindergarten recess to see how much the students enjoyed playing on the bright green and gray equipment! Do you think they're having fun? You be the judge!
Our Fuel Up to Play 60 Captains helped to make a new instructional video on how to play wall ball! Check out the learning packets tab> backyard games> wall ball. Also available is a video explaining knock out basketball. The videos are embedded from youtube, which is an outside site. Be sure to ask an adult before clicking on any link that brings you to a new website. Have fun!
Click HERE for wall ball. Click HERE for knock out basketball. This week and last, students in all grades have been working on developing good batting practices. Students have used video modeling, skill pictures, and skill cues to learn about batting. You can also check the learning packet of this page to learn more and to practice at home! Check out some of our Kindergarten students showing me their knowledge. Awesome!
That's right, I am hosting another field day!!!! Last year (2014) was the first field day the school participated in for a number of years. I've decided to host another field day because our students are so awesome and they had such a great time last year. This year field day will be hosted on Monday, June 8th (6/8). There is no rain date.
Be on the lookout for an informative flyer about what to expect. I can't wait to celebrate another successful year at Hopkins with a day dedicated to physical activity and fun! Hey Bobcats, check out the learning packets tab and portion of this blog. I've uploaded skill posters and multi-page packets to help you learn from home! Specifically the backyard games section has new documents to explain and outline games you can play at home, camp, practice, day care or at recess! Check out how to play 4-square, cornhole, and wall ball! New packets will be uploaded soon. Also be on the look out for instructional videos starring our own Fuel Up to Play 60 Captains. These videos will give you a visual demonstration of games so you can learn before you even come to PE!
Sign up for our team at Fueluptoplay60.com for more ways to stay active and healthy at home. Next week, (27th-1st), classes will begin learning about striking with an implement, specifically batting. Check out the learning packets tab to "flip the classroom" and begin learning about batting before you even come to class!
4th and 5th grade classes will finish their spring fitness testing in push-ups, curl-ups, and flexibility. At Hopkins we have great teachers who really care about their students. Our Special Education and PreK teachers did a phenomenal job preparing their students for The Little Feet Meet at James River High School. The LFM is sponsored by the Special Olympics and is an awesome place for Bobcats to learn, show off their athleticism, challenge themselves, have fun, and meet new friends. I was lucky enough to accompany our students today on the field trip. Check out some of my favorite photos from the day below. Look out for the whole album on hopkinsrocks.com, coming soon! A big thank you to Mrs. Hayes for organizing our participation in the event!
We are back and getting active instantly this week to shake off the dust from spring break! Students continue their work on foot skills and soccer related skills. We are focusing on dribbling with feet, inside of the foot pass, and trapping. Our activities have students using their math skills to add and subtract money targets for passing and also using their offensive and defensive knowledge to apply in a game. Here's a few pictures of 5th graders playing a target passing/shooting game and also using their defensive strategies to play goal keeper or defender. In other news, our old playground was taken out today! We are so excited to welcome a new playground this year. The installation begins on Monday.
Happy Spring Break, Hopkins students and families. I hope you are having a great holiday and spending time with one another. Be sure to stay active this Spring Break for 60 minutes every day. You don't have to exercise for one hour in a row, you can split up your activity time through out the day. When we return on Monday, classes will continue with foot skills and soccer activities. Teachers are always talking about "flipping the classroom", that means the students do some of the learning at home before the teacher introduces the lesson. This way students come to class with some background knowledge and can get started on higher level thinking and application. Try to "flip the classroom" this week for P.E. by investigating different ways to dribble, stop, trap, and kick a soccer ball. What is the best way to dribble while keeping the ball close to your body? What can you do to keep the ball from being taken by a defender? When should you pass the ball and when should you keep it? Here's a picture of first graders using their knowledge to dribble a soccer ball to hold you over until we are back to P.E! See you all next week for fun and active classes! I just came across a "video search" by the Myplate.gov website. "Myplate" teaches us the way our plates should look at meal time with a healthy balance between whole grains, fruit, vegetables, protein and dairy. Visit the website to check out the details. If you enter you have the chance to win $1000!!!
http://www.checkoutmyplate.com/ Put together a video over spring break and enter it in the contest! This week I taught some "crossing the mid-line" activities to classes who had a few extra minutes at the end of P.E. These activities are ones in which a body part crosses over an imaginary vertical line drawn down the middle of the body. For example, touching your right elbow to your left knee would be crossing the mid-line of the body. These skills are considered important for development and can help activate your brain and might even improve writing and reading skills! Students--teach your mid-line activities to the grown up in your house and practice over spring break. Adults--ask your student about crossing the mid-line activities. If your class did not learn about crossing the mid-line activities this week, create your own or search the web for some inspiration. As always, make sure to get adult permission before visiting any websites.
Practice your crossing the mid-line activities over spring break to keep your body moving and your mind sharp! You can also check out the tabs on this blog for April's activity calendar and a fitness board game to play at home. Enjoy your spring break, Bobcats! P.S. Take a picture while doing something physically active or while eating a healthy food. Bring it to school after spring break and I will put your picture up on the Fuel Up to Play 60 Wall of Fame! The end of March is here, Wednesday is April 1st. This week also marks the end of our basketball and hand dribbling skills unit and the start of soccer related dribbling, passing, kicking, and offensive and defensive strategies.
I am also trying something new with our students as we enter the 4th nine weeks. Our students are learning about and participating in instant activities. This means as soon as students enter the gym, they begin moving and exercising. The rules in the gym remain the same even though classes are getting active as soon as they walk in the door. Be sure to sign up for the Hopkins team at Fueluptoplay60.com to track your physical activity and healthy eating habits and the chance to win cool prizes. We need more students to sign up! This FUTP60 trivia question for the week is: Name this sport: It uses a small, hard, round ball and a long stick with a net on the end. Players pass by throwing the ball from one net to another net to catch and throw. Parents, guardians, students...There's still time to sign up online for Fuel Up to Play 60! Students who are Fuel Up to Play 60 participants are automatically entered into awesome sweepstakes based on how many points they've earned. Students can earn points by entering and tracking physical activities and healthy eating habits.
When entering physical activities and healthy eating habits, be sure to select the campaigns that are being used at Hopkins this year... "In-class activity breaks" and "improved school environment"...The more students involved, the more awesome things Hopkins can earn as a school... So what are you waiting for? Visit Fueluptoplay60.com by copying and pasting the words into the URL or by clicking here. Select Hopkins as your school and start reporting on our campaign plays! Our students continue to practice their basketball skills in PE. Check out the students learning to pass and practicing dribbling on pathways below. Be sure to ask your student about the Fuel Up to Play 60 trivia question of the week. Every Monday morning the first 5 student names pulled from the container with the correct answer win a prize. This week's question is as follows... "The March Madness tournament is a tournament for what sport?" Get your answers in before the end of the day on Friday and listen on to the announcements on Monday for a new trivia question. |
