For the next three weeks, classes will work on their basketball skills. Each grade level focuses on important skill development including dribbling and passing. Upper grades will even get the opportunity to do some shooting.
Take a look below at some pictures from today's third, fourth, and fifth grade lessons. In this activity, students practice their dribbling while working together as a team. Students begin by standing in squad group lines on the outside of the basketball court boundaries. When prompted by the music, the first person in their group line dribbles to the middle of the gym and retrieves one piece of miscellaneous equipment. (In the center circle of the gym there is a huge pile of various equipment pieces) After choosing a piece of equipment, the student dribbles back to put their piece in the team hoop. The next person in line receives the ball and follows the same routine to pick another piece of equipment. When the music turns off, all students return to their hoop and begin building together. Students have 90 seconds to work as a team to construct a freestanding tower with the equipment they selected. After hearing the 10 second countdown, students must back away from their creation so I can measure each tower. The team with the tallest, freestanding tower wins the round and gets a point. We continue to play until class is over, and the team with the most points gets to line up first. Aren't our students smart? Using engineering, teamwork, strategy and problem solving, our students showcase their higher level thinking during this P.E. activity!
